Salade du jardin (garden salad)

Many quebecer have their own way to eat it, but it all involves fresh green leaf lettuce and heavy cream.  This is my version.

Salade du jardin
( Garden salad)

Ingredients

1 cup                                   Torn green leaf lettuce
1                                          Pickling cucumber
2 or 3                                  Radishes
1 small                               Native tomato
1 tablespoon                     Heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon                    Chives and/or onion powder and garlic powder to taste.

A lot of salt, a little bit of pepper and a little bit of heavy cream.  Half and half or even milk works, I even use almond milk or coconut milk sometimes.  They are all good but I really like the texture and taste of the heavy cream for it.

Directions

Place the torn lettuce in a dish, follow with the cucumber, radishes, cream, chives or onion powder and pepper.  Mix very so lightly to avoid the cream runs down.

In Quebec we eat it only in late spring and early summer when the green leaf lettuce is so fresh and so good; and it's a treat!

It a good side dish for any kind of meat for dinner or just a tomatoe sandwich for lunch.

Make it yours and bon appétit!

Grandma's bread, made with milk

I'm making bread this morning.  Yesterday I asked aunt Jacinthe to give me Grandma's recipe and she took a picture of it.  I love to see grandma's hand writing and the way it is redacted.  I wonder if she wrote down her mom's instructions.  It doesn"t seem to be  from a book.  I'll have to ask around. I found yeast in the pantry with a 2017 expiration date.  I thought I would steep it in water with sugar and see if it still good or not.  After 10 minutes I was not sure so I thought I would take a picture and asked my aunt if she thinks it's ok.  By the time I got my phone I could see that it was good.  Lesson learned: don't toss your yeast before trying it out.
