Strawberry shortcake ancestor

When I went to the farm to buy strawberries there was a angel cake evidently in display. Instead I made one of my mom's every day desserts when I was growing up, and I suspect it is the ancestor of the strawberry shortcake.  It is almost too simple to talk about it but too good to not to.

Strawberry Shortcake Ancestor

Ingredients

1                                                                 Slice of bread
1 cup                                                         Strawbwrries, sliced
1 tablespoon                                            Cream *
1 teaspoon                                               Sugar or sweetener of choice
1/8 cup                                                      Dark chocolate chips (optional)

Directions

Torn the slice of bread, put it in a bowl, top with the berries then the sweetener and cream.

* heavy cow cream or coconut, half and half or milk of choice.

My mom would use bread, cream and sugar, syrup or molasses, berries or other fruits when having.

When they say not to eat process food it doesn't have to be complicated.

By the way strawberries and maple syrup on peanut butter toast is healthier and tastier than jelly don't you think? So go ahead play with your food, be creative, do it with nature's abundant supplies.  Cook à la you, eat healthy and be well!

Grandma's bread, made with milk

I'm making bread this morning.  Yesterday I asked aunt Jacinthe to give me Grandma's recipe and she took a picture of it.  I love to see grandma's hand writing and the way it is redacted.  I wonder if she wrote down her mom's instructions.  It doesn"t seem to be  from a book.  I'll have to ask around. I found yeast in the pantry with a 2017 expiration date.  I thought I would steep it in water with sugar and see if it still good or not.  After 10 minutes I was not sure so I thought I would take a picture and asked my aunt if she thinks it's ok.  By the time I got my phone I could see that it was good.  Lesson learned: don't toss your yeast before trying it out.
